

1. About the Economics Olympiad
The Economics Olympiad is the world’s largest and most prestigious international competition designed to ignite the minds of young individuals and empower them with essential economic knowledge and skills.
Participants gain enhanced economic and financial literacy, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and exposure to real-world economic scenarios. They engage with leading economists, academics, and entrepreneurs, gain recognition, build networks, and develop the potential to become future leaders in economics.
The EO has four levels:
- School Round
- Regional Round
- National Final
- International Final
Each stage includes unique challenges, assessments, and opportunities for academic and personal development.
2. Eligibility & Participation
You must be aged 14–19 and currently enrolled at a school or college.
No. All students may participate, although those studying Economics or Business may find the content more familiar. Wider reading is encouraged. Recommended reading lists are available on the website.
No. The competition is for individual participants only.
There is no limit. Schools may enter as many students as they wish.

It is your school or college’s official centre number.
Schools register, encourage students to participate, and facilitate testing. Teachers can integrate EO resources into lessons and access further guidance via the registration form.
4. Competition Timeline
23rd–30th January, weekdays only, between 09:00–17:00.
Any time from 23rd–30th January within the above hours.
Between 24th February and 6th March (Mon–Fri). Specific venues TBC.
Held in London during the week commencing 22nd June (after exam season). Date and venue TBC.
10th–14th August 2026.
5. What Happens at Each Stage
Students sit a 25-question online multiple-choice test under exam conditions in school/college.
Held at a local university for the top school-round performers.
Includes:
- A written examination
- Economics challenges
- Inspirational guest speakers
- A full-day programme
A face-to-face event in London celebrating the UK’s top 50 students.
Includes:
- A written examination (judged by an academic panel)
- Shortlisting of the top 10
- A presentation on a current economic problem
- Guest speakers and economic challenges
- Awards ceremony identifying the top 5 who will represent the UK internationally
6. Prizes
- A certificate for all school-round participants
- Progression for winners to regional and national rounds
- Top 5 students earn a place at the International Final in Ancient Olympia, Greece, representing the UK
7. Test Format & Rules (School Round)
- 25 multiple-choice questions
- 40 minutes total
- Students may sit the test once unless a technical issue requires a supervised resit
No. Questions are drawn from a question bank but remain equivalent in difficulty and coverage.
No. Once a question is answered and moved on from, it cannot be revisited.
The test is automatically submitted.
Only:
- Scrap paper
- Pens/pencils
- A calculator
No notes, textbooks, phones, or internet searches allowed.
- Lead teacher provides the link
- Student registers with their own email and password
- Student enters school join code
- Completes pre-test questionnaire
- Accepts GDPR
- Allows screen recording
Emailed to registered teachers before the School Round.
Yes, if necessary (e.g., illness), but they must:
- Keep camera on
- Be supervised in real time by a teacher
8. Technical Issues
- Refresh the page
- If it cannot be reopened, the student may resit using a different email + same join code (teacher discretion)

- Using a phone
- Using notes

9. Results & Certificates
Yes. Upon submission they receive:
- Their score
- A certificate of completion (also emailed)

Yes. Teacher attempts are not recorded.

10. Costs
No. The Economics Olympiad is free for students.
