The Economics Olympiad stands as the world’s foremost and most distinguished international competition, inspiring the brightest young minds and equipping them with the knowledge and skills essential for global leadership.
This eminent contest challenges students to demonstrate mastery in economics and financial literacy through a series of rigorous rounds. Participants engage with complex economic issues, interpret global trends, and craft innovative solutions to pressing challenges that shape the world’s future.
The Olympiad unfolds through regional qualifiers and national finals, culminating in the International Championship—a prestigious event held in the cradle of the Olympic spirit, Ancient Olympia, Greece.
The Rounds
Round 1 - School/College Round (Conducted online at your institution)
The competition commences at the school/college level, where students engage with their peers in a test of economic knowledge and analytical skill. This initial stage, consisting of 40 multiple choice questions, provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their understanding of key economic concepts and problem-solving capabilities. The highest-performing participants progress to the Regional Round.
Round 2 - Regional Round (In person)
The Regional Round unites the highest-performing students from schools across each region. These prestigious in-person events are hosted by universities throughout the UK. Participants will complete a rigorous written examination and engage in a range of analytical and collaborative activities. The day is designed to both challenge and inspire through academic engagement and insights from guest speakers. The top-performing students will advance to the National Final.
Round 3 - National Final (In person)
The National Final unites the top fifty students from across the United Kingdom, each demonstrating exceptional economic understanding and analytical ability. This prestigious event, held in London, serves as the decisive stage in the national competition. Participants will undertake a rigorous written examination and engage in a variety of analytical and collaborative exercises designed to test both depth of knowledge and practical reasoning. The day’s programme combines academic challenge with inspiration, featuring insights from distinguished guest speakers.
The top ten students will move on to an oral assessment with an academic panel, where the five most outstanding participants will be chosen to represent the UK at the International Final.
Round 4 - International Final (In person)
The International Final stands as the pinnacle of the Economics Olympiad—a celebration of intellect, collaboration, and ambition. In the historic setting of Ancient Olympia, Greece, the top five students from each participating country come together for an extraordinary three-day experience. Through challenging tasks, innovative projects, and shared exploration, participants forge connections, test their limits, and embody the true spirit of global excellence.
